Ehrhard Nowak | 1937 - 2017

Stratford Festival News Item, March 22, 2017

We were all saddened to hear that Ehrhard Nowak passed away on Monday this week. Ehrhard was part of the Festival Theatre stage crew and worked here for 25 years from 1977-2002.

I fondly remember times before the show started when he could be found enjoying the summer warmth outside, leaning against the stage door railing, calmly smoking his pipe and welcoming all as they arrived. Through all the chaos he was ever calm and his wisdom supported countless productions. He truly brought his expertise and experience to everything he did. Ehrhard had a special fondness for what he called his many “stand-by” relationships. These were those he made with actors, musicians and crew, in the hushed darkness of backstage during the show while “standing-by” to go on.

All through his life his love for music was a foremost passion, which included being the General Manager of the Canadian Opera Company in the early 1970’s. He shared his life and countless music filled evenings with Alec Cooper for 44 wonderful years.

Alec intends a celebration of Ehrhard’s life later this summer, an evening no doubt full of music and love for this remarkable man.
