Helen Flower | August, 2018

Staff Announcement by The Stratford Festival, August 14, 2018.

News Item

It is with tremendous sadness that we have learned of the passing of milliner Helen Flower, who had just completed her 15th season with the Festival.

Born in the United Kingdom, Helen joined us as an Apprentice Milliner in 2004, working tirelessly to upgrade her skills through courses in tailoring and sewing, and rising to the position of Senior Craftsperson in our Wardrobe department.

Her professionalism, her stellar technical ability, and her deep understanding of her craft won her the admiration of her colleagues, while her particularly English charm (complemented by her own impeccable sense of style), her sense of humour, and her unfailing graciousness won her their hearts.

In our off seasons, Helen also worked at the Banff Centre, the Canadian Opera Company, the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, the Edmonton Opera and Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, as well as for Seamless Costumes in Toronto. In her free time, she loved art and hiking.

Helen was taken from us too early: she still had so much to contribute to the Festival, and she will be sorely missed here. We extend our sincerest condolences to her family and all her friends and colleagues.

In 2011, Helen was featured in a Festival video on the making of hats for that season’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. We include a link to it here, in the hope that it will elicit fond memories of a valued and talented member of our Festival family: Millinery: Behind the Scenes

An informal wake, organized by Helen’s friends and colleagues at the Festival, was held at Pazzo August 14 at 7:30. Her family’s celebration of her life will take place on Monday, August 27 at the Art Gallery of Burlington, 1333 Lakeshore Road, Burlington, ON, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is open to all, but to give the family a sense of numbers, you’re asked to RSVP to helen.flower3@gmail.com by August 21 if you plan to attend.
