News Item

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of prop builder Stewart Robertson, a tremendously talented member of our Festival family for 41 seasons.

Born in Scotland, Stewart came to Canada with his family when he was two. He joined the Festival as a dresser in 1970 and became a design assistant the following year. A member of our Props department from 1973 until his retirement in 2010, he was a familiar and jovial presence at the Festival, his pride in his Scottish origins evident in the colourful Highland dress he often sported for our season opening nights.

In addition to being a superb craftsman, admired and respected by his fellow artisans and by the designers with whom he worked, Stewart was an accomplished performer. As a long-time mainstay of such local theatre groups as Stratford Community Players, St. Marys Community Players and Perth County Players (which he co-founded in 2008), he not only designed and built sets, props and costumes but also gave memorable performances in many key roles, including that of Fagin in Oliver! and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

This is a grievous loss indeed. We send our deepest condolences to Gail, Erin and the other members of Stewart’s family.
