  • Brian Macdonald will be remembered ...

    The esteemed Canadian director and choreographer Brian Macdonald died Saturday in Stratford, Ont. at the age of 86. Mr. Macdonald, a charter member of the National Ballet of Canada, went on to direct musical theatre, opera as well as the award-winning productions of Gilbert and Sullivan for Canada's Stratford Festival.

Macdonald was born in Montreal in 1928 and is widely recognized as a pioneer in Canadian theatre. His talent and expertise were boundless and his productions were admired internationally.

  • Festival dedicates plays to three beloved actors

    Memorial for Bernard Hopkins set for Nov. 16 at the Festival Theatre | October 28, 2014 … The Stratford Festival has lost three beloved former company members over the past number of weeks and will be dedicating productions to their memory next season. The 2015 production of The Alchemist will be dedicated to Edward Atienza. She Stoops to Conquer will be dedicated to Joyce Campion. Love’s Labour’s Lost will be dedicated to Bernard Hopkins.

  • Bernard Hopkins | 1938 - 2014

    The London and Canadian theatre community are mourning Bernard Hopkins, who starred at the Stratford Festival and was a former artistic director at the Grand Theatre. “We lost our Beloved Bern (Wednesday) Oct. 22 at 4:02 p.m. He passed peacefully in the arms of his husband Ian White. He thanks you ALL for your support, sympathy and love,” said a post on Hopkins’ Facebook page.

    PAL Stratford’s ninth annual Expect The Extraordinary “Heart and Home – in Heels” hosted by Lucy Peacock indeed provided extraordinary surprises in music, passion, magic and stagecraft. Counting the audience, actors, musicians, backstage wizards, volunteers and front of house hosts, close to one thousand people supported the PAL Stratford objective of “Caring for our own.”

  • Teddy Atienza | 1924 - 2014

    I am writing to let you know that Teddy died last night just after 8 pm. It was very peaceful. He was listening to Mozart and just slipped away before my eyes. The end of a full and interesting life. He wanted no funeral - but he did want there to be a party. We will be arranging a little celebration of his life to be held here in Stratford. Hopefully it will include some music and some readings. All his friends and those who knew him would be very welcome to come along. I will let everyone know further details as soon as possible.

    The death of Joyce Elaine Campion occurred on September 3, 2014 at Hillside Manor in Stratford, Ontario. She was the daughter of the late Canon J.R. and Ethel Campion. She was predeceased by her brother Canon B.H. Campion. Joyce is survived by her sister-in-law Ann, niece Jennifer (Douglas), nephew Peter (Rebecca), great-nephews Nicolas, Peter and Felix and great-niece Cressida.

    Family, friends and past co-workers are all welcome to join us in the celebration of Jack Merigold’s life at The Performing Arts Lodge on Saturday July 12th at 11:00am.   • William (Vili) Cekuta | 1915 - 2014

    Joyfully we celebrate Vili's life achievements and sadly announce his passing in Toronto, in his 99th year at Dom Lipa Nursing Home - Slovenian Linden Foundation. Vili is fondly remembered by relatives and friends in Canada, Slovenia, Italy, Australia and USA. A man passionate about theatre and travelling, Vili loved his family and was loved by them; Vili is reunited with his wife Milena Cankar (deceased 1994).

  • The Gunner

    Paul Almond, a Canadian author living in Malibu would is launching his new book entitled "The Gunner" on May 6th at 28 Duncannon Drive in Toronto at 7 pm. Fifty percent of the proceeds of the sale of his book at the launch will be donated to PAL Canada. The book is an historical account of World War I, so if anyone has a particular interest in World War I, or know anyone who may have an interest, please forward this information to them.

  • Stratford Festival celebrates surplus at AGM

    The mood at the Stratford Festival's annual general meeting was jubilant as administrators announced a $1.4 million surplus. It's a remarkable turn around considering, at this time last year, the Festival was announcing a $3.4 million deficit.

  • Stratford Festival attendance and revenue up in 2013

    Antoni Cimolino and Anita Gaffney’s first season as artistic director and general manager of the Stratford Festival, respectively, has certainly paid off. In the 2013 season, attendance was up 11 per cent, revenue increased 5 per cent, expenses were down 3.5 per cent and the bottom line was an operating surplus of $1.4 million.

For the past three weeks, we've opened the house to any member of the Stratford Festival Company (performer or crafts person) to drop in on Sunday evenings from 7 to 11 PM. It vividly shows how strongly PAL’s ideals can impact people when they least expect it simply because we do what we do. This is the sort of impression PAL makes when people are suddenly placed in a situation where they “get” what PAL is.

    Katharine Jackson, an honorary life member of PAL Stratford, and lately a resident of Ottawa has passed away. She was predeceased by her husband Brian Jackson in 1990. Katharine was an enthusiastic supporter in the early days of establishing a Performing Arts Lodge in Stratford. The family requests memorial donations to chapters of PAL in Ottawa or Stratford.
