Saluting Our Own

On Monday, October 7th, PAL Stratford is taking over the Festival Theatre to celebrate their eighth annual Expect The Extraordinary Event. This year’s theme is a “Salute to mentors and masters who shaped us,” and the much-anticipated cabaret-style event, hosted by Sharron Matthews, will feature an all-star line-up including the beautiful Hollywood star of stage and screen, Lee Meriwether.

Edward Daranyi, Director and Resident Teaching Artist explains: “Our 2013 Expect the Extraordinary benefit – entitled Salute! – is a salute to our mentors who introduced us to the industry and ushered us along our path. They are our teachers, our protectors, our cheerleaders. They gave to us of their hearts and their minds, filled us with the history and the glory that is the theatre; they held our hands when we were terrified, toasted our triumphs and soothed us through our dark hours. This evening is in celebration of our mentors, the steadfast practitioners of this life that we lead and of the art that we make. We honour them through song and sword and spoken word.”

Expect the Extraordinary is an important event for us,” explained John David Sterne, president of PAL Stratford. “It gives us a chance to say ‘thanks’ to our supporters with an evening of stellar entertainment. And, as a fundraiser, it provides a forum for outreach, to share what PAL is doing, and to reinforce the importance of our capital campaign, 'Places, Please'. We’re honoured to have Lee Meriwether grace our stage and are delighted she was willing to make the trip from L.A.”

Former Miss America, Lee Meriwether is appearing on stage at Theatre West in Los Angeles in “A Short Stay at Carranor” by William Blinn. She is best known for her television roles in All My Children, Barnaby Jones and of course, as Catwoman in Batman.

This year’s “Salute!” honours Maestro Patrick "Paddy" Crean, legendary actor and fight director who became one of the most influential figures in modern stage combat. He left Britain for the Stratford Festival in 1962 to serve as fight arranger for Peter Coe’s Macbeth. After his second season, he decided to make Stratford his home and worked as the festival's fight director until 1983.

The evening promises to be full of surprises, with performances by Canadian tenor Roger Honeywell, Peggy Coffey, David Keeley and Kyle Golemba, vocalists Glen Dias and Pamela Jane Gerrand, jazz instrumentalist Larry McQuarrie, fiddler Dan Stacey and Stratford Festival stars: Robert King, Tyrone Savage, Sara Farb, Sabryn Rock, Valerie Hawkins, Luke Humphrey, Brad Hodder, Jacquelyn French and Arden Couturier.
