Mask Workshop Fundraiser for PAL Stratford

August 18, 11:45 AM

... an exploration of the mask throughout the world from the beginning of time to now.

The mask is a paradox. On the one hand, a world of inertia and stillness just like an artifact from an ancient culture or a sculpture in an art gallery or even a portrait hanging on the wall, and, on the other, with a little poke or jostle the mask can breath life and move its wearer into the domain of action, transformation and space (leading us all into discovery).

"The Mask of the Devil
On my wall hangs a Japanese woodwork,
The mask of an evil demon, painted with gold lacquer.
Compassionately I observe, the swollen veins of the forehead,
suggesting how strenuous it is to be evil."

It is in the domain of action that a doorway to another world is opened, the world of movement, mime, ritual and drama. Even though masks are collected as works of art, they have a primary goal that is always functional rather than decorative.

Barry Karp (actor, writer, director and acting teacher) will present
a Mask workshop at the Birmingham Manor,
240 Birmingham St. Stratford on
August 18th, 2013 at 11:45 AM, $20.00 per person.
Funds raised will be entirely donated to PAL.
To take part, email Elena or Dom or phone 519 273 6545.

Should you not be able to attend but know friends who would be interested, please let them know.
